IAMAT-FSIMT, the Foundation for the Support of Medical Training, has been hearing back from scholars this spring, and we wanted to share a few of their stories with you. Each is a reminder of why your support matters. The training we fund travels with these doctors into the communities and clinics where travellers most often need care.

Dr. Adegboyega Alao, Nigeria (IAMAT Scholar 2024). Since training at the Travel Doctor Clinic in Johannesburg, Dr. Alao has made travel medicine a growing part of his family practice. He now provides travel risk assessments for corporate travellers, pilgrims, students, and expatriates in Lagos, and is preparing to open his own private travel medicine practice in the city.

Dr. Ahmad Mosad, Dubai (IAMAT Scholar 2016). An emergency medicine physician who has practised in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Australia, Ahmad now applies his travel medicine training to serve travellers in the Gulf region. He and his colleagues are currently building a digital platform to help travellers access health support more easily. In his words: “The training and perspective I gained through the IAMAT scholarship have been instrumental in helping me address the unique needs of travellers and mobile populations.”

Dr Vincent Othigo

Dr. Bobby Othigo, Kenya (IAMAT Scholar 2025). Dr. Othigo runs his organization’s regional Travel Advisory Clinic, which serves travellers across Eastern and Southern Africa. In January, he facilitated a travel medicine awareness session for staff from Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda, a session he credits to his scholarship training.

Dr. María Florencia Prieto, Argentina (IAMAT Scholar 2024). An infectious diseases physician at Felipe Heras Hospital in Concordia, Argentina, María Florencia opened the first infectious diseases clinic in her region, where two young doctors are now training under her. She has co-authored research with the United Kingdom’s National Travel Health Network and Centre, recently joined the Latin American Society for Travel Medicine, and is preparing her community for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by promoting vaccination and measles prevention for Argentine travellers heading to North America.

Dr. Paul Yonga, Kenya (IAMAT Scholar 2019). Paul established the Infectious Diseases and International Health Clinic at CA Medlynks in Nairobi, providing pre-travel risk assessments and visa medical exams for travellers across the African continent. He is also a co-author on the upcoming European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Clinical Practice Guidelines on vaccinations in solid organ transplant recipients, to be published jointly in the peer-reviewed journals Clinical Microbiology and Infection and Transplant International in June 2026.
